Motivational Interviewing
Autonomy Therapy is not only able to offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in the City centre of Norwich, Norfolk, NR2, but also Motivational Interviewing.
Motivational interviewing is very effective at eliminating problem behaviours such as addictive behaviours (drug taking, alcohol misuse or smoking) and/or eating excessively and weight issues or problematic sexual appetites.
The wish to change a problematic behaviour is usually associated with the wish to improve health or our social activities and functioning or to prevent problems in the future.
Motivational Interviewing is collaborative and helps to build motivation for change and to help negate ambivalence to change by first understanding an individual’s motivations and what they value highly and what they view to be the costs and benefits of their own situation.
The change is conducted in such a way that the client concludes that change is the preferred solution to his/her problem. Motivational Interviewing is client-centred and a directive therapy for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence towards change.
Motivational Interviewing is a not a set of techniques, but rather a method of communication which evokes change naturally. It centres on the individual processes within the individual that facilitate change and is not and cannot be used to impose change that is inconsistent with the person’s own values and beliefs. Unless change is in the person’s inherent interest or wish, it will not happen. The client retains his or her Autonomy Therapy at all times and, indeed, is responsible for his or her change not the therapist.
