Corporate Services – Employee Health Solutions

Autonomy Therapy (CBT and EMDR) is able to solve your employee absenteeism using psychotherapeutic solutions such as CBT and EMDR.

Sickness absence is a major public health and economic problem. In 2006, 176 million working days were lost; up 10 million on the previous year. Each week 1 million people report sick, 3000 of whom will still be away from work at six months. The costs are enormous. Each year, the cost to industry is at least £11bn. Long term sickness absence contributes more than a third of total number of days lost and up to 75% of absence costs.

Depression and anxiety are now the most common reasons for people having long and short –term absence from work.

They have overtaken musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, which used to prompt most such absences. Sickness absence only serves to reinforce depression and anxiety in those off work and it is often difficult to persuade people who get caught up in events to get back to work. By using CBT you can help change their perception and get some kind of outcome, be it a return to work, a change of job function or even leaving the organisation.

Mental ill health is the second largest cause of time off work in the UK according to new research.

The research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Active Health Partners, suggests that stress, depression and anxiety are on the increase among the UK workforce, accounting for over 50% of mental health problems.

The findings have revealed that the average length of time off for employees suffering from stress is 21 days, which rises to 30 days if the employee is suffering from depression.

Ben Willmott, CIPD employee relations adviser, says “This research shows how important it is for managers to be aware of the signs of mental ill health so that they can take action early and provide support before the individual’s condition deteriorates to the point where they go off on long-term sick leave.”

CBT Therapist shortages

There are long waits for "CBT and EMDR therapy".

The King's College researchers say there are too CBT and EMDR therapists in the UK - just one specialist for every 43,000 workers.

It is common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, rather than complex psychoses that contribute most to this rising sickness absence. Patients tend to prefer CBT and EMDR, but with a limited capacity to provide them the waiting times are commonly long. Patients require a speedier response than is currently delivered, as the longer an individual remains off work, the more difficult a return to work becomes.

CBT and EMDR have become the therapies of choice in the NHS for mental disorders, but the waiting lists are long and without therapy the likelihood of the mental illness becoming worse is great. The consequence of this is prolonged absence from work.

It is in the interests of businesses to cater for these illnesses and to provide therapeutic intervention for their workers in a private capacity, rather than maintaining the expectation that the NHS will provide for these workers in a speedy manner. The longer it takes for CBT and EMDR to take place, the longer the worker will remain off work.
